News from the Women of the ELCA

Here is a “brief” update on activities here at Olean:

AUCTION TEAM:  We served food at the Uhlman auction in Cross Plains on October 16 and the Ruse/Steele auction in Rexville on November 2.  Thanks to Jennifer and Tim Huntington for setting up their camper so we had all the conveniences of home!  A special shout out to those who worked the days of the sales and those who provided the yummy pies and delicious BBQ!!  A nice profit of over $1700 was added to the treasury from these two events.

KITCHEN REMODEL:  As in any remodeling project, things change.  What originally started out as just a peel-and-stick tile backsplash and paint job, turned into a really nice facelift in the kitchen.  At a specially called meeting, the women voted to increase the amount allocated for the project to include a new counter top and sink to go along with the ceramic tile backsplash (which turned out to be a MUCH better option than peel-and-stick!).   HUGE THANKS to David Green and his sidekick, Jerry Smith for the manual labor.  And the paint crew of Ralph and Jennifer Miller and Becky Turner took care of that job on a Sunday afternoon.  If you haven’t had a chance to see it, make sure you do!  It looks (and functions) great!

TURKEY DINNER:   On Sunday, November 3, we put the new kitchen to the test with preparations for our annual turkey dinner.  We served around 165 meals with another 30 or so carry outs.  The proceeds of the dinner, over $1200, were presented to South Ripley Schools to be used for needs of individual children, such as coats, shoes or other items necessary for them to be productive students.  Again, THANKS to everyone who donated items for the dinner as well as those who enjoyed the meal!!

OFFICERS:  At a special meeting after worship on November 17, the following officers were elected for 2014-15:  Jane Earick – Vice-president (who will serve in that capacity for one year before becoming President the following year); Shirley Barth – Secretary; and Kaye Hunger – Education Secretary.  Jennifer Miller – President, Martha Blodgett – Treasurer, and Linda Cutter – Stewardship Secretary complete the group of BOLD women who will lead us next year.

TRIENNIEL GATHERING:  Early registration is now open.  See the brochure on the bulletin board or check out for more details.  Let me know if you are planning to attend so we can make preliminary room reservations.  The Gathering will be held July 24-27, 2014 in Charlotte NC.  In keeping with the theme “of many generations”, it would be great to have several of our own “generations” in attendance!

QUILTS:  Lutheran World Relief quilts continue to be produced on Tuesday afternoons at 1:00.  Extra hands are always welcome and on-the-job training is provided.  Donations of backing and filler material are always appreciated.  Check your closets for any old blankets, sheets, mattress pads, sleeping bags or curtains.  It doesn’t matter if they are stained or have holes.  Just make sure items are clean.  Drop them off in the education building and they will be transformed into a warm blanket for someone in need.  Thanks to Dan and Esther Geisler for delivering 32 quilts to Safe Passage in Batesville!!  Twenty-eight baby quilts, seven afghans, sixteen IV covers, and six hats were delivered to Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center.  Thanks to those who have donated fabric, yarn and talent to make these items for the kids at CCMC.  Check out the picture and thank you note on the bulletin board.  If you have any questions about either of these projects, contact Esther Geisler or Irma Rohls.

CHRISTMAS GIVING PROJECT:  Safe Passage in Batesville will be the recipient of our annual giving project.  Check out the bulletin board display for information.  Items should be returned to the church by Thursday, December 12.  A donation of $1000 was also presented to the South Ripley Elementary Student Council for their annual gift-giving project.

WOMEN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY:  Join us on Thursday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. as we celebrate the birth of Christ.  If you’d like to come and need a ride, let me know.  We will have valet service pick you up at your door!!

PROGRAM BOOKS:  Be sure to pick yours up so you know which committee you are serving on and also when the events are happening!  You’ll want your very own copy just for the cover! What an amazing picture of the hands of the women of the Martha Circle who have led us for so many years.  And they are still going strong!!  Thanks to each of you who so willingly serve in so many capacities.

As this year comes quickly to a close, I want to thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president.  The blessings I have received are many.  May we continue to share the gospel as those who have gone before us have.

Phyllis Armbrecht, President
