Just for Kids: The Closet

1 Peter 2:16

New International Version (NIV)

16 Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.

Alison stomped to her room. Mom said she had to clean her room before dinner, but Alison was tired of dealing with the mess. She opened her closet to put away some sweaters that had piled up. She shoved them into a cubby, pushing back all of the other stuff so the sweaters would fit.

Then she kicked some too-small shoes onto the floor of the closet. She heaped them on top of old stuffed animals and a stray pennant for a team she didn’t really care about anymore. She tried to stuff everything into the closet, and then she shut the door.

Do you ever find yourself in a situation like Alison? Sometimes, we have lots of clutter – not only in our lives but also in our hearts.

We hold on to a grudge from last year. We hold on to worry like it’s a fashion accessory. We hold bitterness in our hearts toward a former friend. Our lives are cluttered from the sin God wants to take away from us. He desires that we live as free and happy as the birds of the air. Instead, we hold on to sin and let it stuff our hearts.

Jesus Christ came into the world in order to clean house. We know how He did it. He died to take our sin away, to make us clean, redeemed children of God. Because of His love for us, we can live in that freedom now and forever!

Journal: Do you have a hard time forgiving others? Do you hold on to grudges or forget them easily? Do you sometimes need help with worry? Write a prayer thanking God for His forgiveness and strength in helping you let go of sin and rejoice in His forgiveness.

Pray:  Dear Jesus, thank You for the forgiveness You show me every day. Please help me to let go of bitterness and hatred. Through Jesus Christ, my Lord, I pray. Amen.
