Donald Hunger

obt_hungerDonald Eugene Herman Hunger age 81, of Versailles, Indiana entered this life on March 1, 1933, in Benham, Indiana, the eldest son of Willard Herman Louis & Roberta Elmo (Steele) Hunger. He was raised in Ripley County, Indiana & was a 1951 graduate of Cross Plains High School. Donald was baptized, confirmed, and a member of Luther League at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Olean. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church (Olean, Indiana and Smyrna, Indiana) throughout his life. Donald married Edna Pauline “Polly” (Pollard) Hunger on February 9, 1952 at Milan Baptist Church, Milan, Indiana. During their 62 years of marriage they raised and nurtured a family of five children, sixteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.  Donald enjoyed passing his time by debating politics and discussing his faith with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking family road trips to the Smokey Mountains, Tennessee, Emerald Isle, South Carolina, and Summerset, Kentucky and nap time. He also served the family as the original GPS by providing directions over the phone on many occasions. Donald started his trucking career at age 16 driving for his father driving a milk route. After high school he drove for B&H Trucking. In 1956, he became the owner/operator of Donald Hunger Trucking and later incorporated his company which became known as Hunger Trucking, Incorporated. Throughout the years Donald was a subcontracted driver for B&H Trucking, Lawrenceburg Trucking, RiverBend Transport, Laughery Valley Ag and Reis Trucking before he retired his truck and trailers in 2010. He was a life time member of the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA).  Over the years Donald drove many models of Mack trucks. People knew Donald up and down the highway by his CB name, “Corncob”. He met many people during his travels and established lifelong friendships. Donald was known as a truck driver but will be remembered for his love of his family and his faith. Donald will be lovingly remembered by his wife Polly; his children Sue & Lee Buchanan of Benham, Shirley & Tracy Lemon of Versailles, Ron & Michelle Hunger of Versailles, and Jim & Jennifer Hunger of Scottsburg; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; his siblings Ruth Hunger, Ernest Lee & Kay Hunger, Anita Mae & Dave Giltner, Larry & Esther Hunger, Eileen & Frank LaGreca, Karen & Ramon Sauley, and Rebecca Hunger; and many nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents Willard & Roberta Hunger, his daughter Angela Marie Hunger Hoskins, his brothers Willard Keith Hunger and Paul Arnold Hunger and his great-grand child Little McKinley Carver Pennington. The visitation will be Sunday, November 23rd, 2014 from 3pm to 7pm at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles; the funeral will follow on Monday, 11:00am at the St Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Curtis Black officiating. Memorials may be made to the Angela Hoskins Scholarship Fund, Matt’s Mission or the church.
